Finding Grace

Finding Grace

Wm. Shakespeare

"That which we call a rose..."

Perhaps grace is not so much to be found as it is to be received.
It rides on gratitude, appreciation and forgiveness.
It is free of ego, desire or manipulation. It comes and goes
as it pleases, leaving sweetness in the air.
Will you open the door and invite grace to enter?
Maybe it’s time.

Drilling for Faith

Nothing is certain in this physical world except uncertainty.  That simple truth escapes most of us until we are shaken by life itself.  A medical diagnosis, death of a loved one, natural disaster, and financial setbacks are just a few of the “wake up” calls we have that begin our search for meaning and sense-making when everything we know falls apart. I know this firsthand, been there, done that, and lived to laugh about it all.  Here’s some of what I’ve learned.

There is another world available in the midst of darkness. It is the world of faith, a world beyond logical reasoning, The free online dictionary says that faith is the “confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness or a person, idea or thing; or belief that does not rest on logical evidence nor material evidence.”

Drilling for faith is the process of discovering who we truly are, why we are here, and what brings us joy and sustains us.  It is an illogical journey, and one that ultimately unites us with a higher perspective.  It would so much easier if we drilled before life’s storms hit. Regardless of your current situation, you can dig for faith at any time.

That higher perspective is not static. It grows with experience and wisdom.  Regardless of our situation, we always have a choice about where to put our attention.  Our thoughts and feelings about a matter physiologically change our body.  While self-pity, anger, resentment and the like may be “justified”  the only one hurt by this is us.

So take the time today to re-evaluate, relax and breathe. Life itself is a journey, and as much as you wish for the good old days, power comes when we allow ourselves to be where we’re at.  We may not like it, but it’s a starting point to drill deeply.

Drilling for faith is a process. Just as an oil drill moves through the layers of earth, so we drill down into our physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual beliefs, themes, judgments and areas where we have registered hurt in our life. Be patient, kind and gentle with yourself. Reach out and let yourself be touched, heard and helped.  Honor all your emotions and practice the art of choosing.  It’s not easy, but it is simple.

Life and Death

Life is a precious gift.  So is death.  It reminds us that life is fragile.  Loved ones die, plants die, stars and suns die. Physical death is the ultimate deadline from which there is no escape.

We die little by little when we withhold loving from ourselves and others. We die each time our heart calls us to follow our dreams and we ignore the deepest longings of our Soul.

What if life wasn’t so much about accomplishing stuff, nor making money, nor keeping up with those around us?

  • What if life was simply an opportunity to express loving in action?
  • What if that loving was the only legacy that mattered?
  • What if loving was the key to living that defeated the fear of death?

Here’s a challenge for you:  Look at everything that happens through the eyes of loving.  If you can’t find the loving, then love the part of you that can’t love.  That’s honesty. That’s loving in action.

The Nine Magic Words

I discovered the nine magic words about 17 years ago, while in graduate school.

For a statistics assignment, I decided to pick my younger sister as a “relationship project.”

I  designed a simple experiment where I could track the effects of both “inner” and “outer” activities in order to record the results. My intention was to just observe what happened, if anything. It was a relatively easy study, since I’d had virtually no contact with my sister or family for more than 17 years.

I decided to do a really simple “inner” activity.  Each morning I would say the nine magic worlds:  God bless you.  I love you.  Peace, Be Still.  I’d learned about them from John-Roger, best-selling author and founder of many wonderful non-profit institutions.

I chose as my external activity sending my sister a card one time a month, and also one phone call a month.  That was it.  After the second or third day, I thought to myself, “You might as well throw in the rest of your family, and yourself for good measure.”  So, I would get up, sit in my chair and say the nine magic words, preceded by their names.  As I recall, I began my experiment in early October.

The results were outstanding!  On Thanksgiving day, less than eight weeks later, I was shocked that my sister called me to wish me a Happy Thanksgiving.  That had NEVER happened before.  The Thanksgiving holiday had only just begun.  Later that day, every member of my family that I’d prayed for (only my sister got a call or note) called me out of the blue to wish me a Happy Thanksgiving. None of them had ever called me prior to that time.

We now accept each other, honor and cherish our connection. It was an amazing outcome, something I had never expected!

Through the years, I have seen these simple nine words change lives.  One women who had been married to her husband for about 50 years came to see me, saying, “I have to divorce him. I can’t take any more.” Her assignment was to say the nine words.  She said the thought of saying them made her sick. She humored me, even thought she didn’t believe a word of it.  A month later she came back, and said she’d been saying them…and that I’d ruined her chances of leaving her husband.  She’s found herself in love again.

These words work really well with people you don’t like, or situations that cause pain.  Although it’s counter intuitive, the words open the door for miracles to happen.  We may feel out of control or powerless in certain areas of our lives. It may be hard to start. I know I felt that way.  Yet these words can shift our energy, and attitude.

Don’t take my word for it though.  Try it!

Here they are again, with variations:

God bless you (or this situation)
I love you (or if that is too hard, sometimes I said “I accept you”) or the situation.
Peace – Be still.

Nine simple words that changed my life.  Saying them takes courage. It takes discipline to move beyond our anger or upset and speak kind words. This is not to in any way diminish your pain or suffering.  Quite the contrary. It is the antidote to negativity and the doorway to returning joy.

Good luck — and don’t forget to bless yourself as well. Keep me posted… I’d love to hear what happens.

No Shortage of Joy – Find it Today!

No Shortage of Joy – Find it Today!

I first met Julie in the 80′s when she was asking some tough questions about “why” life was as it was.

One day she appeared at a workshop, prepared to do what it took to find answers to her whys: why she was born a dwarf. Why none of the supplements she took to help her degenerative arthritis helped, why life and people could be so cruel.

Today, Julie has found her answers, and shares them with us!  Her condition isn’t the curse she thought.  Instead it has allowed her to become a magician! As a young girl she considered herself a freak, unworthy of a rich, full life. There were desperate times of humiliation, medical studies, naked photos for medical texts, crippling arthritis that stopped her work as an artist, and multiple operations, including two brain surgeries.  I know, becuase I was there for some of those surgeries, and I watched her face dark times. Even then, she had a sparkle in her eye, an infectious laugh, and changed my life in ways she couldn’t imagine…

Some people are born to shine their light on the world Julie Genovese is one of them.
