Powerful Women Make a Difference

You could have heard a pin drop as the women shared their stories and their hearts.

Over 100 powerful women gathered last night to hear Marianne Williamson speak about her upcoming workshop in LA.  What impressed me most is the commitment of the the group to whom Marianne was speaking, the Los Angeles Chapter of First Tuesday. Spearheaded by Marcy Cole, Ph.D, First Tuesday USA has an intention to create and expand a vibrant and diverse community for extraordinary women. Inspired by an Oprah challenge, Marcy, a Los Angeles based psychotherapist, also founded The First Tuesday Circle of Giving. Coming together monthly for dinner and speakers, the women of First Tuesday unite networking with heartfelt service to those less fortunate.

Women-power was palpable as several members rose to share their goals for helping others.  Tasia, a young mother of three, is committed to adopting 100 orphaned children.  To date she has adopted 22, as a result of her connection to SOS Children’s Villages.  Thirty dollars a month is all it takes to help a child find a mother, siblings a home, and a village.  To learn more or to adopt a child, go to:  www.sos-usa.org/inspired

SOS was founded in 1949, and they now have almost 500 villages in 132 countries, including the United States. More than 73,000 children are being raised in their villages. Through their programs of education, family strengthening, medical care and outreach programs, the lives of over 1 million people are being impacted each year. What impresses me the most about SOS is their commitment to the family structure. The orphans get a mother, all siblings stay together, so that family ties are sustained and strengthened.

Once a year the First Tuesday Circle of Giving selects a financially challenged or homeless family  as part of a service project. To see videos of their projects, go to  http://snipurl.com/u9z9n. In addition, First Tuesday also donated to A Window Between Worlds (www.awbw.or) an organization dedicated to using the creative arts to help battered women and children end the cycle of domestic violence.  Last year their generous donation benefited a domestic violence shelter in Tulare County.

I’m especially grateful to First Tuesday for their gift, as I’m currently board president for AWBW.  During the last 10 years as a volunteer for AWBW, I have experienced first hand the power of art to end the cycle of domestic violence. What a joy to be in connection with those who choose to give back and help make this world a better place for us all.  Regardless of who or how you choose to serve, just do it.  Your life will never be the same.

Never underestimate a group of determined women to help others!

Why not take the service challenge?  It has been said that service is the highest form of loving.  The way to open up to more abundance is to expand and give your gifts away. They can only return to sender.

Superman Takes Clark Kent’s Job

Flash, Universe Provides Insight (UPI) press

It was announced today that Superman has replaced Clark Kent, the mild mannered reporter for the Daily Planet.

Superman revealed that he and Clark Kent are one and the same.  Superman confessed that his decision to hide was initially made in order to fit in with the establishment.  Ashamed that he was able to leap tall buildings with a single bound, he created the mild mannered persona of Clark Kent.  “It is no longer possible to hide behind a meek reporter’s image, so that I will be safe from humiliation because I am different.”  The hero went on to acknowledge all the Supermen and Superwomen on Earth who face life fully without hiding behind a mask.

The cape’s out of the bag, so to speak.  Superman, as an advocate for all the hidden supermen and women in the world, announced that the time has come for them to step forward as themselves.  “The Earth needs humans to step into their full potential, without regard to the need for approval, security, or control,” said Superman.

When asked who inspired this revelation, Superman acknowledged it was the actor, Christopher Reeve, who taught him that it is not physical strength, but strength of character, determination, dedication, love, and the willingness to be vulnerable that convinced him to “get real.” Every human has their own “kryptonite” that has the potential to weaken them.  A truly great person learns to overcome their challenges and turn them to strengths.

Superman hopes that his decision will inspire others to live fully and rise to the challenge of becoming powerful heros and heroines in their own lives.  That, concluded comic book hero, “is the way to transform your world.”

Spirituality & the Business of Life

Do what you love and the Spirit will follow! In today’s world there is a growing trend toward applying spiritual principles in everyday life. That includes not only your personal life, but your business life as well.

Millions of individuals are no longer willing to compromise their ethics for their paycheck.  Large portions of corporate Americans are leaving, either by choice or lay off.  Many are choosing to simplify their lifestyle, oftentimes choosing to follow a dream and become entrepreneurs. Greed and corruption have broken the backs of many corporations.

There is a countering ground swell of people who practice applied spirituality. They care, take appropriate action, and actively work to make this world a better place. They have always been there. Now, however, the are becoming more visible.

What is practical spirituality? I refer to spiritual as that which expresses the highest part of our nature, and religion as a container through which we express this nature. Spirituality can be expressed apart from religion, although religion is not really separate from spirituality.

Practical spirituality is the application of spiritual principles to life. Love, faith, integrity, trust, gratitude, acceptance, cooperation, curiosity, joy, service, and creativity represent facets in the fabric of spiritual expression. When these attributes are applied in the business world they foster good will, loyalty, and a host of other benefits to employees and customers alike.

In the four years between 1994 and 1998, the Gallup organization found that the number of people who said they needed spiritual growth jumped from 56 to 82 percent. Today, workshops and books integrating spirituality and business are common.

Fifteen years ago, the separation between spiritual practice and business was distinct. Boundary crossing was an illicit journey.  As a national karate champion, I had the luxury of sharing my spiritual perspectives with the language of the martial arts. The paradox is that the martial arts are spiritual arts.

Commitment to something you love will eventually blossom into the language of spirituality.  To love life is to live fullyTo live fully requires discipline, or discipleship towards something. Martial arts, a business, a loved hobby, service to others, caring for those you love, and commitment to a cause are all aspects of a spiritual life in action.

Retired Americans  are looking for second or third careers. While some do so out of necessity, others express a heartfelt desire to make a difference in the world – spirituality in action.

Young people have embraced social entrepreneurship and social media as avenues to create change.  It’s not uncommon for entrepreneurs to donate 10% of their income to charities of their choice. Young and old alike are actively reaching out to build bridges of opportunity for those they have chosen to serve.  The gifts they bring gives me hope that, “The best is yet to come.”

An adventure…

“An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly understood; an inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.” G.K. Chesterson, 20th century English author

A dear friend of mine is currently in jail.  She calls it a Divine mix-up, and it certainly is a huge inconvenience.   She vowed that no matter what, this would be the greatest adventure of her life.

Her first adventure was to learn the language and the rhythm of this new world. Fear, uncertainty, dread…pervasive, palpable. Breathing in, breathing out, my friend’s touchstone, as she acknowledged each emotion. She set about finding small wonders in the midst of a hard, foreign and unforgiving landscape.  Sunrises and sunsets became promises of new beginnings.

Within a week an inmate asked her for reading lessons.  The following week two other women came, asking to be shown how to stay calm. She taught them to meditate.  Now a small group of like-minded women meet weekly in a support group: their self-appointed task to share the miracles and beauty around them.  My friend, a Jewish woman prays daily with a Muslim.  Together they turn to their G-d in time of need. They accept each others diffferences and celebrate their similarities. Each of them works to live in the moment. That is all they have.

My friend has created a ripple effect that touches everyone she meets.  Inmates say, “Why are you so happy – don’t you know you are in prison?”  “Yes,” she answers, “What does that have to do with my happiness?”  They stare at her, mouths open.  They wonder what makes her her tick.  She has become a curiosity – and a role model for new possibilities and dreams yet unborn.

They ask, “Is it possible to change my life?”  “Yes,” my friend answers emphatically, “of course.”  She teaches them to visualize, dream, set goals.  They ask her if she will help those that long to change and don’t know how. ”Yes and yes again,” she says. The guards don’t know what to make of her; the inmates are puzzled; and the Divine adventure continues unfolding. Lives are touched and changed in this most unlikely of places.

Is there an adventure in your life that is wrongly understood?  Consider choosing happiness. Dare to take yourself out of prison (for a misunderstood adventure is a self-imposed prison of judgment) and choose to find the adventure in your life.  Why not…only you can declare an inconvenience an adventure. Make up your mind, and set yourself free to discover and grow.

My friend has decided that if G-d is good, then everything that happens to her is for her greatest good….and then she gets busy looking for the adventure.

G. K. Chesterson was called the eccentric prince of paradox.  Perhaps he and my friend are connected to the same source of wisdom that helps turn an inconvenience into an adventure! Life happens. What you do with it is up to you.  That, my friends, is the great paradox of living brilliantly.

Write it down: Show up and sizzle

Cameron Johnson is a 23 year old who adds new light to living brilliantly. He first showed up for himself at the age of 8 when he wrote Donald Trump a letter. He wanted toi see the suite in the Plaza Hotel where his hero from Home Alone stayed. He never heard from Mr. Trump, but the room was waiting for him and his family when they arrived in the Big Apple. Cameron learned then that he could get what he asked for. In that instance, he wanted to grow up to be like Donald Trump.

Both Donald Trump and Cameron have something in common. They take action and sizzle. The secret to showing up is to do what is present at the moment it presents itself. By this I mean that when you are in cooperation with your intuition, your intellect, and your willingness to ask for what you want, the Heavens will open to support you.

Cameron recently wrote Donald Trump a second letter. This time, he asked for a review of his new book: You Call the Shots. He certainly has in his own life: by the age of 12 he had made $50,000 in his own business. He was a millionaire before he graduated from high school.

Let’s take a page from their book. They just do it. Cameron suggests that the key is starting small, going for what you love with a passion, and looking close to home for your ideas. One of his business’s was selling Beanie Babies on EBay.

What lights you up? Take a moment, take a breath, and take stock of what makes your creativity sizzle. It’s never to late to go from living to living brilliantly. It’s an inside job, and what a blast-off you’ll have when you write down your dreams, take small consistent actions, and keep a positive focus on where you are headed.

In the words of Cameron Johnson “True prosperity isn’t something you take from the world: it’s something you share with the world.”
-Cameron Johnson, You Call the Shots

If not now, then when…

Here’s to your brilliance,

Dr. Lin
