ONE PERSON CAN Make a Difference.  You Can Too!

Twenty years ago, a shy art teacher decided to travel cross country, sharing art at domestic violence shelters.  It was her hope that she could share art, her “safe haven,” with others who suffered as she did while growing up.  That one summer of giving back kept on giving…

Now, more than two decades later, A Window Between Worlds (awbw.org) remains the only national organization that provides free art leader training and art supplies to Domestic Violence (DV) shelters nationwide.   Thousands of times, survivors and shelter staff have found that art provides a direct, gentle, and effective way for women and children (and men) to reconnect with parts of themselves that they shut off in order to survive the violence.

By supporting AWBW, you are helping thousands of women and children to heal from the deep impact of domestic violence through art workshops.  This year more than 60,000 women and children will began the process of ending domestic violence as a result of programs in 25 states.  I know first hand the power of art to heal the past, access the present and fuel the future.  Today, I’m also Board Chair of a Window Between Worlds.

EVERY one of us is touched by domestic violence or trauma in some way. 

  • One in four women will experience and report violence during their lifetime.
  • 63% of boys, age 11-20 who commit murder, kill the man who was abusing their mother.” (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence & FBI Crime Statistics)
  •  A child witnessing domestic violence is the strongest risk factor for transmitting violent behavior to the next generation. (American Psychology Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family.

What a child does with that experience is critical.  AWBW is a window of safety to help children break the cycle of violence.
